Administrative structure

The administrative division of Bosnia and Herzegovina includes two equal entities, the Republic of Srpska (49% of the total territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (51% of the total territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the Brčko District, which does not belong to any of the entities and it is a separate administrative units over which the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina have supreme power.

The entities as administrative units have a high level of autonomy – they have a president, assembly, government and judiciary. Entities are competent for public administration, health, education, police, defence, planning and many other areas, while foreign policy, defence, border control, elections, foreign trade, fiscal and monetary policies and some other areas are within state competence.
